I have a clock for a heart…and the man who put it there tried to take it out.
Time Collectors are modern day genies capable of exchanging wishes for time. Elizabeth Wicker lives within a steampunk world riddled with the supernatural. Among the stories of witches, Bacts, and other monsters, Time Collectors remain as the greatest hushed secret among the noble families. They are temptation’s greatest tools. A contract with a Time Collector is a guaranteed death sentence, and for some the price isn’t worth the prize. But when Elizabeth is struck down by a fatal heart attack, she finds herself trapped beneath a Time Collector’s blade. With no time left to offer, she makes a desperate sacrifice for a second chance at life. If there’s only one truth, it is a Time Collector will always come back to collect.
I dove into this book giddy with excitement because of its blurb. The first few chapters were so good – I was so in love with the premise and the setting. I loved the author’s writing style and how she made me feel like I was there interacting with the world and its inhabitants. The plot however, was quite a rollercoaster, and I’m still not whether it was a great ride or not. So many things were happening and a lot of characters were introduced in the second half of the book that I found myself a confounded mess three-quarters in. There were a lot of rough edges in the transitioning of events and I felt it went downhill from there. And because of that, the characters weren’t given enough time to develop and really be cemented into the reader’s mind. Characters came and went in a blur that I failed to empathize and really get to know them. Some of them were really interesting from the get-go, but as I’ve said, they all passed by like the wind and failed to make a difference to me. The magic system, although extremely interesting and new, was a bit confusing to me. Nevertheless, I would still watch out for the sequel and for this author.
